DE TRUT

The Trut is a legendary, non-commercial queer club in Amsterdam that has played an important role in the city's LGBTIQA+ scene for decades. The club is best known for its unique atmosphere, anti-commercial stance, and the fact that it is run exclusively by volunteers.

On October 17, 1981, the vacant Tetterode complex on the Bilderdijkstraat in Amsterdam is squatted. The former type foundry and printing press factory, where hundreds of Amsterdammers had worked since 1903, is then nominated for demolition. We, the employees of Association the Trut, all work as volunteers and the fixed costs of the Trut are relatively low.

As a result, the association makes a nice profit, despite the low drink prices.

We give the net profit to Foundation The Trut Fund, which is then spent entirely on subsidies for LHBTQIA+ projects worldwide.

Every two months, the foundation's subsidy committee meets to discuss the applications received.

DOCUMENT OUR HISTORY NOW

Document Our History Now supports documentary makers, photographers, documentalists and journalists in Southeast Asia in their efforts to tell stories and document Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender communities, individuals and events, along with their history and what they are striving for.

In countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, many women and men are actively working to bring about gender equality. They are promoting the visibility and advocating the interests and the rights of LGBT groups. In many of those countries, however, it is not always possible for LGBT people to express themselves and live their lives openly; sometimes that can even be outright dangerous. Document Our History Now is a foundation that wants to support existing initiatives to document that struggle.

THE PROJECT: SHORT FILM FISH SLEEP WITH EYES OPEN

The team behind Fish Sleep with Eyes Open is committed to telling a story that is often invisible. Mental health struggles are real, yet rarely spoken about, especially within Thai society and the queer community. This film aims to break that silence.

Depression in the LGBTQ+ community is not a niche issue; it’s a global crisis. LGBTQ+ people are 2–3 times more likely to experience depression and anxiety. More than 50% of LGBTQ+ youth report symptoms of depression, and nearly 40% have seriously considered suicide. In Thailand, over half of LGBTQ+ individuals have thought about suicide, and around 1 in 6 have attempted it. These numbers are not about identity; they reflect stigma, rejection, and lack of support. This film is about making the invisible visible, and creating space for understanding and change.
